R&D

The field of research and development

Technological advances that affecting consumed and industrial products and services, have shortened product life cycles. Shorter life cycle of product and service mean that companies must continually improve their ability to introduce new and revised products rapidly and successfully in order to continue to grow, be profitable, and even survive.

The R&D department is usually responsible for introducing new products and improving or modifying existing or old products so that the company can successfully implement strategies. R&D department managers and employees perform the following specialized tasks:

  • Advanced technology transfer
  • Designing new products and services
  • Adapting processes and adapting them to local raw materials
  • Adapting processes to local markets and modifying products to suit customer tastes.

(Production and Marketing

In the traditional sequence of R&D steps, there is often a time gap. Also, many refinements are made to turn an invention into a marketable product. Therefore, the economic impact of an invention remains unknown for some time.

Today, a new approach called systems focus integrates the entire R&D process. Instead of a sequential R&D process, systems-focused companies create an integrated team. This team consists of a group or core of managers, scientists, and engineers who want to match the research done in the lab with the capabilities available in manufacturing.

First generation of R&D

The first generation was pursued in the 1950s and 1960s and can be described as putting a few knowledgeable people in a dark room, throwing money at them, and hoping.        At this time, R&D was an ivory tower, where decisions were made about unlikely technologies without interaction with the rest of the company. R&D units of this generation were managed in an organizational hierarchy, and their costs were considered overhead costs. There was no clear connection between R&D and business strategy.

Second generation of R&D

In the 1970s, a strategic framework was provided for R&D units at the project level, and business was considered an external customer for R&D performers. In other words, the integration of R&D and business emerged. This view forced companies to place R&D more under the control of business units than under the control of the company. In fact, a strong orientation towards the market took place.

The third generation of R&D

By the late 1980s, R&D leaders sought to be present throughout the organization and to have formal relationships with all units. In this generation, R&D seeks to find ways to meet existing business needs and other company needs while at the same time participating in identifying and exploiting technology opportunities in existing and new businesses.

Third-generation R&D management focused on synergy between businesses and projects, and in a way, considered the entire organization as a single whole. Thus, collaboration between units took a structured form, thereby minimizing risk and allowing the entire organization to share in the benefits of research decisions.

The fourth generation of R&D

In this generation of R&D, the process of learning simultaneously with customers has been introduced. The pace and global scope of change force companies to balance the increased risk of change with the business opportunities. This means experimenting with new ideas in strong alliances with customers. In this process, IT tools may play a key role.

Fifth generation R&D

In this generation, R&D is created as part of a whole innovation system involving competitors, suppliers, customers and distributors, which extends beyond the boundaries of the company. In this generation, knowledge is the only asset that needs to be managed.

Adding up

Given the evolution of research and development, each company should work in this direction in accordance with its capabilities and needs. In general, research and development activities should have a more precise relationship with organizational goals and be more coordinated with them. Research and development units in organizations are actually responsible for the long-term effectiveness of the organization.

During the period of establishing a company, the role of research and development is completely individual, and one or more people start a company with an innovation. In the infancy of the company, the role of research and development is practically overshadowed by the company’s current activities to provide liquidity and becomes somewhat less important, but when the liquidity problem is resolved, in the period of rapid growth, one of the main roles of management is again the role of entrepreneurship or research and development. In the remaining stages of the organization’s growth, the key role of research and development is removed from the individual and becomes apparent in the form of organizational units. In fact, the role of entrepreneurship in these stages of a company’s life is assigned to research and development units.

What should be kept in mind is that research and development activities should not stop at the level of the first and second generations units. For this purpose, it should be considered one of the main decision-making units in organizational decision-making. Otherwise, if it is under the influence of other units, it will not be practically effective.
